Full Disclosure: This is a paid post (our first ever). Yes, I succumbed to the temptation to accept a fee to promote apps and resources focused on fire prevention awareness. – KW

With National Fire Prevention Week (Oct 5 – 11, 2014) approaching quickly, educators and parents may be looking for resources to help students learn about fire prevention and safety. Look no more! The National Fire Prevention Association provides a variety of fun free apps and other resources for just that purpose.

In addition to their site Sparky.org, the NFPA also has a site designed specifically as an educational resource – SparkySchoolhouse.org. These sites use the character Sparky the Fire Dog to help kids learn about fire safety and fire prevention.

Be sure to check out the NFPA's newest app, The Case of the Missing Smoke Alarms! Apps like The Case of the Missing Smoke Alarms and Sparky's Birthday Surprise ‘gamify' the educational process and bring a sense of adventure and excitement to a subject that can be a little scary.

To aid teachers, the National Fire Prevention Association has created Lessons related to their apps – look to the menu at the top of the page and click on the Resources link to find these. There are also other educational resources on the site, including music videos and eBooks. Scroll down the Home Page on the site to sign up for Safety Source, NFPA’s public education newsletter.

Parent Resources

Parents should look to the site menu (at the top of this site's pages) for Parent's resources page, which includes a number of good Printables.

Between Sparky.org and SparkySchoolhouse.org, there is no shortage of great tools and techniques to help children learn the importance of fire prevention and fire safety awareness in a fun, engaging way!
