Celebrating “The 12 Days of Ed Tech” (Rap & Video)

Enjoy a fun Holiday Hip-Hop Romp Through the World of Instructional Technology!

One of the most enjoyable sessions I attended at the TLIPAD 2014 Conference earlier this month was “Rapping Across the Curriculum” by Jeremy Hartzell. I have to applaud creative teachers like Hartzell for bringing their passion and a sense of fun to developing ideas like this for getting students actively involved in the learning process.

Hartzell shared his web site, rappingacrossthecurriculum.weebly.com, and lots of resources and ideas for using rap as a means to get students to engage with different subjects in a memorable way (I've asked him if he would write a post for the site and certainly hope he takes me up on the offer).

In the meanwhile, I used some of the resources and ideas he provided to turn my “12 Days of Ed Tech” into a rap! The music behind the rap is “Big Ballin' Beat”, one of the free-to-use songs available on Flocabulary, an “educational hip-hop” site. The images are all Creative Commons images, and are all cited in the YouTube video description.

Check it out (yo)!

Of course, I'd feel remiss if I didn't point out that this song ‘parody' and video simply lists tools without broaching on the all important idea of how they can partner with pedagogy to facilitate improved learning outcomes (the true thrust of this site and my advocacy of educational uses of technology). But hey … this is just for fun, so don't get your pencils in a bunch!

While my own musical stylings are more along the lines of rock, blues, jazz, and folk, it was a lot of fun trying my hand at hip hop (I hope you'll check out my recently released EP, Keeping the Dream Alive, and support a great cause in the process!).

Wishing everyone a great holiday season! Yo ho ho!
