Twitter & Education?

Posted By K. Walsh On February 8, 2009 @ 8:11 am In Twitter (Microblogging) | 6 Comments

With all the buzz about Twitter these days, I figured I should look into what was going on with the potential uses of this microblogging application in the Educational arena. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised by the extent of web articles and postings about this topic. If this is of interest to you, here’s just a few of the more useful references I found on the subject.

  • In this 2 and half minute video posting, a professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, David Parry, discusses how he uses Twitter in an introductory course on computer media communication. Solid insight into a real life use of the application in an educational setting:

  • Educause ’7 things you should know about’ series article. This series is of articles from the outstanding Educause organization is frequently cited, and I would be remiss not to include a link to their excellent article on the subject:

  • “14 Days of Twitter” - Nicole Melander required students to use Twitter in the Social Networking and Business course she teaches at American University and put up a couple posts about it on her blog. Again, great insight into real world use of the microblogging aplication in education. http://digitalmindsblogger.blogspot.com/2008/12/14-days-of-twitter-part-one-i-hate.html [3]
  • Twitter’s page about using Twitter in Education: There is a good amount of information accessible via the links on this page, but it takes some digging, as it is just a collection of links (with limited insight into their content). This listing certainly does manage to convey a sense of the expanding use of the application in educational settings. http://www.twitter.com/education [4].

If you are an educator and a fan of twitter, there’s no shortage of ideas out there, just a quick search away, that are right up your alley!
