Here’s a few tips to help.

Guest post from Amanda Tradwick.

Taking courses online provides flexibility for a wide range of students. Working adults can balance the demands of study with other commitments such as career and family. Students with different learning styles can create their own program of study. Those with financial difficulties can take classes part-time while working to pay for tuition.

While the flexibility of online study creates these options for many students, it can also lead to lost focus and struggles with motivation. Online study is primarily self-directed, and finding ways to stay motivated is key to success. These ideas can help you stick with it for the long haul.

1. Set a Realistic Schedule
Excitement over beginning a program of study can cause some students to set big goals and to take on more than they can handle. It can become easy to schedule more classes and more commitments than can reasonably be managed, causing feelings of being overwhelmed that can cause you to give up. In order to stay focused and motivated, you need to create a more realistic schedule of tasks that can actually be completed in the time allotted. Completing these small goals will create a sense of accomplishment that will inspire you to keep working.

2. Take Breaks
All work and no play makes Jack a very unmotivated boy. You need to give yourself a breather every now and then so that you can are focused and energized when it’s time to study. Schedule time for activities that you enjoy so that you can get a break from intense work and so you can have something to look forward to in your schedule. Knowing that you can enjoy a movie or a night out with friends guilt-free if you finish your project can motivate you to keep going and to finish more quickly.

3. Become Social
Studying online can be isolating for many students. You don’t see your instructor or your classmates every day like you would in a traditional classroom. You can help bridge this gap by interacting with your instructor and your classmates in other ways — through online discussion forums, video conferencing, and phone calls. Build an online support community to help you connect to others who are going through a similar experience. You can get inspiration and support from one another by talking about ideas, offering each other study tips, and more.

4. Make Connections
Sometimes, it can seem like you’re studying in a vacuum. Passing a test can seem like a means unto itself. It can be difficult to keep in mind how what you’re doing will lead to real-world results, such as the type of job you will have or the type of lifestyle you will be able to provide for your family. Find motivation by connecting what you’re studying to what you will be doing once you graduate. Learn about how what you’re studying connects to what is happening currently in your field, how it is used by working professionals, and more. Don’t let your studies be limited by the classroom.

5. Review Goals
Why did you decide to get your degree? What made you choose the field you are studying? Why did you elect to take your courses online rather than in a traditional classroom setting? Remembering the answers to these questions can help you stay motivated in your studies. Regularly review your personal goals to remember why you are doing what you are doing. This can help you remember that you aren’t studying for this test just to pass a class, but that you are doing it because you are passionate about becoming a designer, or because you want to be a role model for your children, or because you want to prove to yourself that you can meet the challenge.

Finding ways to stay motivated while you are studying for your degree online is critical to your academic success. Setting a realistic schedule, making time for fun, keeping your goals in mind, and finding support can all help you to stay motivated when you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by your studies.

Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) is an exciting grant awarding collaboration between five education technology organizations, and they are currently on their third round of grants. Last year, NGLC awarded $17.5 million in grants to 48 organizations, including research universities, community colleges, start-up companies, state agencies, associations working with school districts, and more.

The NGLC is governed by EDUCAUSE, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the League for Innovation in the Community College, the International Association for K-12 Online Learning, and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

Wave III: Breakthrough Models for College Readiness and Completion
The latest round of grants (accepting proposals through June 8 of 2012) is focused on the development of new blended learning models that will, “provide support to educators and innovators who have a coherent vision for highly engaging learning pathways that span secondary school through postsecondary completion and that will prepare students for economic, social, and civic success.”

Wave III features two separate Request for Proposals: one for the postsecondary level and one for the secondary level (grades 6-12). The NGLC’s vision for Wave IIIa, “Breakthrough Models for College Readiness”, is to identify fundamentally redesigned scalable models that combine the best aspects of brick and mortar and online learning to result in more personalized learning and demonstration of subject mastery (application instructions here).

Wave IIIb grants will “spotlight innovative delivery models that generate high student outcomes at an affordable cost”, encouraging the development of next generation online and blended programs leading to associates or bachelor’s degrees (application instructions here).

Past Grants
The first two rounds of grants focused on “Building Blocks for College Completion”.

Wave I consisted of four challenges: deployment of open core courseware, scaling of blended learning programs, encouragement of deeper learner engagement and mobilization of learning analytics. Winners are listed here.

Wave II was comprised of two interdependent elements – next generation approaches to learning content, and next generation assessments. Winners are listed here.

Future Opportunities
NGLC appears to be in this for the long haul, so if you have some creative ideas about technology solutions that help students prepare for college or succeed in their postsecondary education, keep your eye on the Next Generation Learning Challenge’s website for future grant opportunities.

This time of year, many students are knee-deep in writing papers and other assignments that may require citing sources. One thing is for sure: few students enjoy creating citations in the required citation styles. However, there are tools out there that can help students understand the breakdown of citations.

Following are several online citation builders that are geared towards helping students with the main academic citation styles: American Psychological Association (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA), and Chicago Manual of Style. Even though these online citation builders have been developed to provide consistent citations with the rules set out by the citation style guides, users are ultimately responsible for the citations and should be sure to proofread them for accuracy.

The Son of Citation Machine is a great aid for writing a research papers and assignments. Established in 2000, the site lets the individual choose the citation style (MLA, APA, etc.). Next, the individual chooses the type of source: book, journal, magazine, website, and various other types. After filling out the appropriate fields based on citation standards and submitting the form, the individual conveniently gets the bibliographic citation and in-text citation.

North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries developed the Citation Builder. The Citation Builder does citations for books, chapters or essays from books, magazine articles, newspaper articles, journal articles, and web sites. After filling out a form, only the bibliographic citation is provided.

KnightCite is maintained by the Hekman Library at Calvin College, Michigan. The service was created in 2004 and is available to members within and outside of the Calvin community. It generates bibliographic citations for MLA, APA and the Chicago Manual of Style, and it cites a variety of materials ranging from sacred texts to cartoons.

Lastly, BibMe is a free auto-fill bibliographic generator that will format your bibliography to the main citation styles. It uses a search engine powered by World Cat to automatically produce the citation of a book and the engine also gathers basic information for other source types.

If you have other great citation apps you like to use, please comment and share them with other readers.

In closing, another reminder that it is important for students and scholars to remember that although these tools create the bibliographic citation, it is essential to review the accuracy of the citation before incorporating it into your research paper or assignment. Best of luck in your academic undertakings!

How about reading device dependence? How much of a challenge does this present in terms of the proliferation of the eTextbook?

What does the future of digital course materials look like?

What kinds of exciting developments can we look forward to from CourseSmart in 2012?

Thanks again to Jill for taking the time to work with us to put together this insightful and informative interview.

Guest Post by Karishma Marathe

Google’s Chromebook was launched in 2010 – a netbook that uses Google’s cloud based Chrome OS operating system. It looks exactly like a netbook, but here’s the interesting part: the Chromebook does not have any physical storage, instead, all user data and applications are stored in Google’s cloud. So you have all the benefits of a notebook (roomy keyboard, solid exterior, etc.) with the all the qualities of a tablet device (a clean web browser, tons of applications, and so on).

“Cloud computing” is a commonly heard phrase in tech circles these days, but we’re not all too clear on what it means. Running an IT Support company in Bristol, it’s something that we get asked a lot about lately. Cloud Computing essentially means getting services over the Internet, such as software applications, file storage, and so on, typically accessed using a Web
browser.

In May, EmergingEdTech wrote about the reasons why education needs to welcome internet technologies, and the Chromebook is a dexterous tool to support this new revolution in the way young people, and adults, learn and work. Almost every school aged child has used the Internet – whether it’s for academic or personal use, and the Chromebook is a natural extension of this. What might strike users though is that there is no ‘desktop’ concept here – you open the Web browser and download apps as you wish.

Chromebooks are entirely dependent on the Internet for performance, and have built-in Wi-Fi and optional 3G – so portability is no issue, and since everything is stored in the cloud, students and teachers can continue working from home too, without the fear of losing data. Schools can also make use of Google’s suit of collaboration and management tools and obtain numerous web-based resources.

Chromebook makes computing a simpler experience and it helps that it’s very fast, to boot (pun intended!) – the average start up time is just 8 seconds! And it helps that it has a really long battery life too. Another really cool thing about the Chromebook is that it has an automatic update feature. But it’s important to remember that the Chromebook can only function
if the user has Wi-Fi, if not, then the device is unfortunately, completely worthless. However, the bright side is that 3G/4G technology is spreading quickly.

Some people are of the opinion that the Chrome OS can be difficult for the average user – compared to the iPad for example which is famous for its simplicity, but one should keep in mind the cost and the positive physical attributes of the Chromebook, like the fact that not everyone is comfortable typing without a physical keyboard.

To learn more about the advantages of the Chromebook for Education (and Business), visit this Chromebook web page from Google.

Guest post by Nishadha Silva.

Presenting subject matter in an easy to visualize way is an important part of teaching. Many teachers are looking for easy to use and cost effective diagramming tools to draw charts and diagrams. Creately is a web based diagramming tool, that supports many diagrams types including Flowcharts, Venn diagrams, story boards etc, which are commonly used in teaching. Although presenting the subject matter using diagrams is great, there are a few limitation when it comes to using diagram software. Mentioned below are some of those problems and how Creately addresses them.

Accessibility - One of the biggest problems with desktop diagramming software is that they are limited to that machine. So if you want to access some diagrams from school and home then you need to have the software installed on both computers. Also, if you start drawing a diagram from school and want to finish it at home, then you need to bring it home using a external hard drive or access it through some online storage like email or online file hosting. These things take additional time and can even result in corrupt files.

The advantage of an online diagramming tool is that all your diagrams are stored online, so you can access them anytime, anywhere as long as you have Internet access. Creately even has its own desktop software that automatically syncs with your online account, making it ideal for offline drawing as well.

One of many Creately How-To Videos from the Cinergix Channel on YouTube.

Pricing - Another common problem with diagramming software is the heavy price tag. Even though educational institutes get discounted prices, a personal license for Microsoft Visio can cost from $60 to $100 (and you need to produce your university card and go through the university administration to get the discount). Creately personal plan starts at 5$ per month, which is affordable for most people. For educational institutions that are looking for multiple licenses or a desktop version of the software, there is a discounted price scheme. Contact edu@creately.com for discounted rates. If you are a charity or an open source project, you are also eligible for discounted rates.

Easy to use tools and interface - Creately was featured in TechCrunch and MakeUseOf because of its innovative use of technology and easy to use tools. Since Creately launched, a lot of focus was given to make diagramming fun and easy. There are many templates available so you can start drawing diagrams quickly. There are many shapes and objects like business objects, people shapes, commonly used shapes loaded so you can start using them straightaway. The video above shows how connectors are designed in a user friendly way, making it very easy to adjust and connect objects.

Lots of free resources - There are many resources about diagramming available for free in the Creately website. There are mini sites for important diagram types and articles and pages for almost every diagram type. A good example of a mini site is this Flowchart Information mini site. It has templates for you to download, explanation of the diagram type, explanation of the symbols used in a diagram type, real world examples of using the diagram and other articles about that specific diagram type. It’s a great resource for beginners and expert users alike.

Team Collaboration - Team collaboration is one of the biggest issues addressed by Creately. Although it was designed for use by software teams it is a great tool to be used in the classrooms as well. Imagine two or three students working on a diagram, with it shown to the class using a projector. That’s the sort of thing you can achieve using Creately.

I hope the above facts tempt you to try Creately. It can be used to draw all sorts of things and you can contribute to the diagramming community by making the diagrams public, so others can learn from them. If you have any questions feel free to ask them in the comments section or by contacting us through the website.

Article supplied by Karen Lederer from Dominican University’s Masters degree in education.

Is the threat of cyber bullying as bad as the media makes it out to be? How much are children truly at risk when they check their email or send a text to a friend about after school plans? When it comes to education, many school systems place extreme restrictions on the internet in order to protect children from potentially dangerous interactions. Not only do these blocks keep out the undesirable sites, they also prevent access to sites that promote learning and creativity.

(Image from CanadianParents.com web site)

News outlets would have us believe that the problem of cyber safety – bullying, stalking, predatory behavior and more – is so prevalent that if we don’t see it happening in our homes something must be wrong. But is this picture an accurate one? Recent studies and polls indicate that while cyber safety certainly is a valid concern, we may not need to worry as much as we are told we should. The stories in the news are the exception, and at times quite sensational. While we should not diminish the impact of these tragedies, the reality is that they are not everyday occurrences.

There are definitely misconceptions about internet safety and cyber bullying, one of them being that it is more common than it is. The truth is that most kids are not bullies, most adults are not prone to predatory behavior, and most computer users are responsible and respectful when it comes to online interactions. Unfortunately, as is often the case, it’s the rotten eggs that get the attention, causing many people to believe that there is more bad than good in this world.

The issue with this overblown culture of fear is that the attention these issues are getting may actually lead to more of the behavior we don’t want to see happening. If young people believe that cyber bullying is as rampant and common as it’s portrayed to be, they may feel that it’s something okay to do.

This is where the idea of “positive norming” can be helpful. Positive norming, simply put, is alternative to all the fear-based messages we receive about cyber bullying, internet safety, and so much more. The actual facts are presented about what the majority of people do, and the majority does NOT participate in bullying or risky behavior. By placing an emphasis on the behavior that is not the norm, people believe that it is much more common than it really is.

In order to succeed in school, college and work, children need to learn computer and internet skills from an early age. The best approach with youth is to adopt positive images, messages and role models. It’s just as easy and effective to create a culture of responsibility and respect than it is to instill fear. By sending the message that being respectful is normal, and the most kids do not bully, then a positive online environment should naturally occur.

As Anne Frank wrote, “Despite everything, I believe people are really good at heart.” If parents and educators are willing to adopt this approach with their children and students, perhaps the media outlets bent on scaring us into believing that evil is always just around the corner might just get the message, too.

Guest Post by Derek Gurr.

It isn’t uncommon for students to have a variety of reactions when they are first introduced to a cadaver lab. These can range from fainting to laughter. It is unsettling for anybody to see a dead human form. It is difficult for many to even dissect a grasshopper without getting squeamish. The idea of cutting open something that was living has kept a lot of people from finding out what lies below the skin.

But not anymore.

The Virtual Cadaver
A new “interactive anatomy study table” developed by Anatomage, a company which specializes in 3D medical technology, allows students to find out what the inside of a human body looks like without making a single cut. Instead of using a scalpel, students use their finger to make “incisions” in the 3D projection of a human body. The table offers doctors and students an incredibly accurate and detailed image of skeletal and muscle systems.

The potential that this table has is incredible. Colleges without access to a cadaver lab will still have the ability to get to know human anatomy in a personal way. Learning the different parts of the brain becomes much easier when you are physically using your hands to explore a digital recreation of one.

Touchscreen technology allows students to spin, drag, and make incisions in the digital flesh, examining different body parts more closely. In the future, students will be able to take home scans that they looked at during class and view them on their iPad or other mobile devices. Although even a digital representation cannot replace the real thing, it can certainly aid the process and prepare students to explore a real cadaver lab.

Doctors can make scans of patients and then use the scan to educate them. Simply using vocabulary is often confusing to patients; the table will allow them to see both what is wrong and how the treatment process is going to work. This visual explanation can help to alleviate worries and increase the confidence level of concerned patients and families.

The table is one of many recent medical inventions that will help doctors in their work.

Advances in Ultrasound Technology
Early in 2011, a team of students from Brigham Young University in Utah released a protoype of a program to process and store ultrasound images online, as part of a Microsoft tech competition. This program and others like it could enable people in poverty-stricken areas of the world to use ultrasound technology without the need of special viewing equipment. The World Health Organization estimates that 2/3 of the world’s inhabitants don’t have access to ultrasound technology.

The program they created could help put that technology into the hands of many medical professionals working in smaller clinics. This could greatly facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of thousands of patients in many different countries. The equipment is much more portable than traditional ultrasound equipment. If necessary, physicians could even take it to a patient’s home. Once the ultrasound is taken, the image can then be uploaded to the cloud. Once on the cloud, physicians can further analyze the images and store them for future viewing.

iPod Apps
New iPod apps can do everything from helping to diagnose illnesses to taking a patient’s pulse. One app even helps doctors to learn medical vocabulary in Spanish. This could greatly improve the experience of patients whose native tongue isn’t English. Like many other language apps, the Medical Spanish app includes audio so you can listen to and practice Spanish phrases and other terminology.

Technology is molding medicine in ways that would make Hypocrate’s head spin. The advancements we will continue to see in medical education and practice, enabled by virtual, web-enabled, and mobile technologies, are fascinating and empowering. Do you know of similar technologies recently introduced, or waiting in the wings? We’d love to hear about them.

Thanks to the folks at IML for this guest post. - KW

Whether you’re organizing a class, a conference, or even a television show, wider audience participation can greatly increase the depth, value and inclusivity of your event. You’re probably already aware of student response systems, or electronic voting systems, which enable students to electronically respond to questions you present, but modern audience participation systems can do so much more.

While electronic voting enables your audience to express themselves through the selection of simple yes or no or multiple choice responses, it is now possible to provide them with the means to easily communicate their thoughts in greater detail, and become truly involved.

Facilitating live discussion
IML’s Connector audience participation system features a range of features that expand on the concept of electronic voting and take it forward to a new level of interaction. Functioning as a handheld microphone and a mobile speaker, the Connector provides your audience with the means to make their voices heard, and makes it easier for them to hear everything that is going on.

The built-in handheld microphone can be enabled or disabled by the presenter. This means that during debating sessions the audience can get involved to an unprecedented extent, while the overall control of the event is still retained by the presenter or organizer.

Electronic voting on key issues can be further augmented by the addition of instantaneous messaging from participants. The IML Connector features an easy to use QWERTY keypad with which the audience can type out short messages relating to topics being voted on or discussed. These can then be displayed at the front of the auditorium for all to see, creating a valuable additional channel of dialogue.

Simultaneous translation
Finally, to ensure that everyone can understand the discussion or debate, the audience participation system can be used to receive simultaneous interpretation. The way this works is that the participant inserts their headphones into the Connector and selects their preferred language from the audio channels available. Meanwhile an interpreter working at the event provides the translation.

If you want your students and participants to do more than just listen to what’s said and cast votes at your event or meeting, it may be time to take audience participation to the next level.
