Welcome
Welcome to “EmergingEdTech”. Properly implemented and supported instructional technologies and tools can help to make learning more engaging and more productive for students and teachers alike, improving learning outcomes and helping to prepare students for continued education and ultimately productive, successful careers. The nature of these technologies and tools and how they are being incorporate and embraced in teaching is constantly evolving, with new ideas and applications emerging every day. I’ve devoted many hours to learning more about this since I started this site in 2009 and I’ve been sharing this journey with readers like you. Come join the conversation!
Check out the EmergingEdTech introductory video!
Each week, I research relevant topics and write a couple articles (at times accompanied by a video) providing information, insight, and/or opinion about those topics. We also get some great guest posts from educators, administrators, technologists, and other writers. EmergingEdTech publishes a few of these articles each week, along with a “Tweet Wrap” post on Fridays (consolidating most of the Tweets I posted that week about ed tech articles and resources that I think readers might find informative and useful).
There are right ways and wrong ways to approach education/instructional technology. Technology just for the sake of technology is a mistake. As with any successful project, technology implementations in schools and classrooms, no matter how small or large, will benefit from thoughtful planning. Failing to properly learn and plan how technology will be used in an educational setting is a sure way to give “ed tech” a black eye, and sour students, educators, and parents on the prospect. At EmergingEdTech, we try to offer guidance and insights on what works, and on ways to avoid furthering the disconnect that can exist between technology and the classroom.
Come learn and explore with us, and share your insights with others!
My qualifications
I have been in the information technology field for over 20 years, working at a senior management level for more than half of that time. In 2008 I joined The College of Westchester [3] in White Plains, NY (where I am currently Chief Information Officer) and started focusing increasing attention on instructional uses of current and emerging Internet technologies. There is so much that can be done to engage students with these evolving technologies, and educators should strive to be aware of them, and to provide students with insights into them.
We really hope to encourage a dialogue here – to hear back from readers who have used these and similar technologies and can share their experiences, perspective, and knowledge.

AND NOW FOR A LITTLE SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION (OF A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT NATURE!)
In addition to blogging, another little hobby of mine is music. I write, sing, play guitar, and record my own original songs, and the occasional cover song. I’ve also put together a few videos – some performance videos and some more produced videos. I share these on my YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/user/minstrel [7]. I hope you’ll stop by and check some of these out.
Here’s a couple original songs and videos (created with a mix of PowerPoint, Photoshop, Camtasia, Vuvox, and a few other apps):
