Dave - Thank you for these detailed suggestions. These sound like great tips to help anyone trying to get the most out of Windows Movie Maker, which really is a very capable free app includced with Windows (and now available online as a Microsoft 'Live' product). I ultimately ended up going with Camtasia, so I can now record, edit, and produce high resolution video with ease, but of course, this was at a cost (about $180 for educators).

Sounds like you are making a large movie file, to help w movie make you need to do a few things to your computer, to help it out, (right click on the blue bar at the bottem of your screen) go to task manager click on the prossesses Tab find movie maker (it must be running) \ right click on movie maker\set priority\ and set to "above normal" or "high"

next go to My computer and right click\ porperties\ now click the avance tab in the performance window click "settings" \ now click : adjust for best performance, then put check marks in the last 4 boxes and APPLY, at the top of this same window click the Advanced tab and check the "Background serveces" and again APPLY, You should also Defrag, but never disc clean up while you have video clips in movie make that you are working on,

Another thing that will help with a large movie file is save the project for every 10 minites of video that being worked on and re-import it in to movie maker, and drag it on to the time line in the proper order.

I also recently searched to find tools to screencast and then edit in moviemaker. I ended up using screenr, downloading the .m4v, converting with "freevideoconverter" from koyotesoft to a .avi.
I guess I didn't notice the quality problem, but I'll check again. And I'll probably buy the Pinnacle Studio to get more editing options.

My big questions is: do you know anyway to also get audio from the screen you're casting (not just from your mic) - without having to hold the mic down to your speakers??

Yeah, Buzz - I probably should have clarified that. I'm looking for the PC. Thanks for bringing it up - it's certainly an important distinction! Of course, it does leave me wondering if one would experience a similar issue with iMovie?

What about Apple's iMovie? It's free on every Mac. Or are you looking or something just for the PC?
